Club History.
Babbacombe Corinthians FC was formed in 1930 when the original Babbacombe FC disbanded. Several of the players had left the previous season to form the now defunct Babbacombe Rangers FC.
They played their home matches at Wall’s Hill in Torquay and had a fair amount of success, culminating in winning the Herald Cup in 1947 when they beat Brixham United 4-0, thanks mainly to a nifty little left-winger called Johnny Brown, who did a great deal for local youth football in the area.
Some of their other regular players were Sam Bowden, who later became the League Secretary, Fred Neal and George Tooley.
Referee for the final was Bill Davey who was a great stalwart for the South Devon Football League and the Devon FA.
They reached the final again the following year and played Buckfastleigh Rangers.The score was 1-1 at full time but they lost 3-1 after extra time.
Things took a turn for the worse soon after this and sadly the club folded in 1953
In 1964, Brian Copplestone who is the current president of the club and was then a player for Colleton United revived the club. He manager to obtain the use of the lower pitch at Stoodley Knowle and recruited players such as Dave Street, Tony & Peter Addis, Barry Wadlan, Dave Haydock, Dave Jackson, Brian Slocombe, Pete Archer and most notably Roger Newton, who along with Barry Hayward became the clubs most prolific goal scorers. Roger has currently changed his sport to the gentle are of bowls, whereas Barry has stayed in the game and gas become a well respected referee.
The club entered Junior division two with the first game back being a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Kingsbridge. The referee for the day was none other than Lester Shapter on his debut with a whistle!. Who would have predicted that he would have gone on to a successful career on the Football League.
Things continued to improve and a few seasons later they were promoted to the Premier Division. By then they had moved to the top pitch at Stoodly Knowle after Windsor United pulled out their reserve side. Currently they are in division four and also field a reserve side in division five.
